Walter the fatberg-fighting Wasteater joins Biffa’s monster truck fleet

A new sewer sludge slurping Wasteater has joined waste management firm, Biffa’s fleet of head-turning ‘monster’ trucks.

Unlike its trade waste chomping cousins, Walter sucks up grease, silt and muck from drains, sewers, gullies and culverts.

Fallen twigs and leaves, along with festive cooking fat poured down the sink, can all contribute to an increase in blocked pipes and flooding at this time of year.

Powered by Cappolletto’s Caprecy JetVac technology, Walter combines high-pressure jetting, powerful suction and a five-stage water recycling system into a single compact unit.

The result is a fast, efficient and sustainable cleaning solution for industrial sites and urban infrastructure, predominantly across the Midlands and the North of England.

The JetVac system reduces the need for multiple vehicles and operatives, making it ideal for hard-to-reach locations and emergency callouts.

It also delivers significant reductions in water use and carbon emissions than comparable systems – helping customers meet environmental targets while keeping operations flowing.

Walter is available to industrial manufacturers, facilities managers, and local authorities responsible for wastewater infrastructure. Biffa’s certified drainage teams are trained to the highest industry standards and provide full compliance reporting as part of the service.

There are a variety of treatment and disposal options for the waste Walter collects, including energy recovery and composting.

James Bissell, Head of Tankers & Industrial Services at Biffa, said: “Walter isn’t just another truck – he represents how innovation and character can come together to tackle real environmental challenges in a fun and engaging way.

“The next-gen JetVac technology he uses is a major step forward in how we approach industrial cleaning – whether that’s a one-off clearance or routine maintenance – with minimal disruption and in a way that supports our customers’ environmental goals.”

Walter will also feature in educational campaigns with schools and community groups, helping raise awareness of the environmental risks posed by contaminated sludge and industrial runoff.
