Commercial cleaning firm sharpens operational focus and brand strategy through leadership programme

A commercial cleaning and environmental services firm has strengthened its operational clarity and long-term growth strategy after completing the national Help to Grow: Management programme.

Dove Cleaning & Environmental Services, based in Altrincham, operates across the commercial cleaning and facilities sector, supporting businesses with professional cleaning and environmental services.

As the company continued to grow, owner Dan Quigley joined the 12-week, government-backed leadership initiative, delivered by the University of Salford, to step back from day-to-day delivery and take a more structured view of how the business operates and evolves.

For many owner-managed service businesses, balancing client delivery with financial oversight, team development and brand positioning can be challenging. Quigley said the programme had an immediate impact on how the company works.

He commented: “The biggest value for me was being able to take what I learned straight back to my team and get everyone involved. The problem-solving work we did helped us prioritise what matters most, from financial stability to developing the brand for the future.”

Help to Grow: Management supports SME leaders in strengthening productivity, leadership capability and long-term planning. Participants develop clearer financial frameworks, defined leadership roles and structured approaches to growth, alongside exploring digital tools and AI that can reduce duplication and manual processes.

Dr Ann Mulhaney, Associate Professor for Change Management at the University of Salford, which delivered the programme said: “Dan is part of a cohort that has been a real pleasure to work with. The calibre of leadership, openness to challenge and willingness to reflect has been exceptional. Over the 12 weeks, we’ve seen participants move from firefighting to taking confident, informed decisions about how their businesses grow, lead their people and adopt new ways of working.

“If you are an SME leader looking for the space, support and challenge to work on your business, not just in it, I would strongly encourage you to join a future cohort.”

Help to Grow: Management is delivered through a national network of 64 accredited business schools, with the ambition to support 30,000 SMEs across the UK.

The 12-week, 50-hour programme is 90 per cent government-funded, reducing the cost to £750 per participant. On completion, leaders join a national alumni network for ongoing support and collaboration.
